John challenges Weston’s new Labour MP over Winter Fuel payments

Weston-super-Mare’s former MP John Penrose took to Twitter ahead of the Government’s vote on whether to scrap Winter Fuel Allowance for pensioners to express his concern over the impact such a decision would have on the local elderly population. He wrote:

Despite this appeal, Aldridge cast his vote in favor of removing the allowance, impacting an estimated 17,532 pensioners in Weston-super-Mare. The following day, John followed up with another tweet, questioning Aldridge’s stance during the vote:

The vote has ignited significant local and national debate, with many questioning the long-term impact on the elderly community with cold weather on the horizon and rising energy prices.

    What a disgrace. Everything is so expensive every time one goes shopping. This is a real smack in the purse.
    Also our NHS needs help. We were the envy of every other country. However, that has all changed.

    Dan Aldridge will not get my vote. When he’s tried living on a pension – in other words living at grass roots level – maybe then he can justify voting in favour of scrapping winter fuel allowance. We sre the generation who have already paid all our WORKING lives into the system to support the NHS and the Government, who have saved some of our earnings as recommended by our parents, only to find that actually we will be much worse off fancially than those who qualify for state benefits etc, which we have all contributed towards.

    It was never a free vote for any of them and were pressured into how to vote so it’s not a free vote but a party decision one more step towards a dictatorship we must not go toward this again and those in government should be held accountable to those that loose their lives this winter.

    Dan Aldridge thinks it acceptable to reply to concerns over the winter fuel payment with a standard Labour central office print. I have asked him to comment on the widely spread comment in the media that Rachel Reeves received £4000 in heating allowance on her Parliamentary expenses. She obviously doesn’t want to go cold! No response yet received.
